Afro-Textured Hair Transplant

Afro-textured hair transplantation requires an understanding of hair both above and below the surface of the scalp. The visible curl is only part of the picture: tightly curled follicles can also curve beneath the skin, changing the way extraction needs to be planned and performed.

Why specialist experience matters

A punch enters the scalp from the surface, but the follicle beneath it may follow a curved path. Understanding that geometry is central to clean extraction and protecting the follicular unit.

Our Afro-textured hair cases are matched with doctors who have a particular clinical interest and dedicated experience in tightly curled hair, including its follicular geometry, extraction challenges and implantation considerations.

Punch selection and extraction technique

Afro-textured hair is not treated with one standard punch or extraction setting. The doctor assesses curl pattern, skin characteristics, follicular direction and donor density before selecting the extraction approach.

Precision matters more than simply chasing the smallest possible punch size because the instrument must accommodate the path and calibre of the follicular unit beneath the skin.

Traction alopecia

Traction alopecia is a common reason patients with Afro-textured hair seek restoration. Repeated tension from tight hairstyles can lead to permanent loss around the hairline and temples.

Once the pattern has stabilised and the area is suitable for transplantation, grafts can be used to rebuild these zones and restore a stronger natural frame to the face.

The visual advantage of curl

Curl and volume can create strong visual coverage. This means density is influenced not only by graft numbers but also by the natural characteristics of the hair itself, allowing the restoration plan to make intelligent use of the patient’s own texture.

FUE, FUT and DHI / Choi

Afro-textured hair is not limited to one technique. FUE or FUT can be used for harvesting, while implantation can be carried out using forceps or DHI/Choi implanters. The approach is selected around the individual donor area, follicular geometry and restoration design.

Hairline design for Afro-textured hair

Natural Afro hairlines vary significantly between individuals. Hairline shape, temporal angles, density distribution and curl direction are planned around the patient’s own features and existing pattern rather than a generic template.

What happens next

Assessment looks at both the visible hair characteristics and the behaviour of the donor follicles beneath the skin. The doctor then advises the harvesting and implantation strategy best suited to the restoration.
